Lush - When I Die

Lush - what a band. Sometimes when I get bored of new music or just cant find something that engages me I tend to fall back on one of several bands - Conflict, The Smiths, Joy Division, Fugazi or Lush. Trusted stalwarts. Comfort music. My first taste of 'shoegaze' was from these guys, in fact their album Spooky would still remain in my Top Ten list, inspiring artwork by Vaughan Oliver too. It's one of those records that brings me back in time every time I hear it. I'm no longer a wage slave toiling begrudgingly office bound for the yankee dollar but a stick skinny unwashed punk sleeping on a dilapidated mattress in a smoke filled run down flat, drunk and giggling on a heady concoction of cheap cooking sherry and cheaper cider (we called this bastard of a drink WolfBite, try it at your peril).

This is When I Die from their second LP Split, if you haven't heard these guys may I heartily recommend their back catalogue. This is a particularly moving song, the lyrics blow me away - check them out below the YouTube box.

If you walked in now
I wouldn't start I wouldn't frown
And if you just appeared
I wouldn't cry or think it weird

'Cause you are still around
You're in the air, you're in the ground
And you can't go away
I am afraid you're here to stay

Friends don't understand
They close the door, they raise their hands

She says she heard your voice
Of course she does, she has no choice

I was hours ahead
When they removed you from your bed

They drank all the while
Until you said goodbye

Why are we sitting here in ourselves?
Why are we sitting here in ourselves?
Why are we sitting here in ourselves?

I don't look up, I don't look down
I look ahead and make no sound
My love was there,
I only stare

Healty in my dreams
Is what you are, is what is seems

What does it all mean?
You're only hiding behind a screen

Curse the English day
For what it forces us to say
Banish all the pain

'Cause when I die, die
I'll see you again.
